On my recent trip to Mexico City, I tried out AeroMexico AM Plus, the carrier’s premium economy product, thanks to a complimentary upgrade. Despite the initial excitement, the upgrade fell short of what I expected from a “premium” experience.
In this AeroMexico AM Plus review, I’ll go into detail about the seating, amenities, and overall service quality. By the end, we’ll determine whether the AM Plus upgrade is worth considering. Come along as I thoroughly examine the key aspects of this premium economy offering.
What is AeroMexico AM Plus?
Before diving into the AeroMexico AM Plus review, let’s look at what it is and what it is not.
AeroMexico AM Plus is the airline’s Premium Economy offering, providing an enhanced travel experience for passengers seeking additional comfort and amenities. Positioned between AeroMexico Economy and Business Class, AM Plus by AeroMexico offers passengers upgraded seating with more legroom, priority boarding, and an improved in-flight experience.
AeroMexico premium economy, often referred to as AM Plus AeroMexico,, aims to provide travelers with an upgraded journey, balancing affordability with added conveniences. Whether it’s the extra space, priority perks, or a more comfortable travel environment, AM Plus offers an enticing option for those looking to enhance their AeroMexico flight experience.
How Do You Upgrade to AeroMexico AM Plus?
With a ridiculous seat sale price of $350 CAD for a Vancouver to Mexico City return, I was happy to splurge a little on some extra comfort for the six-hour flight. When trying to purchase an upgrade online, the only available seats were in the exit row. This is a dirty trick that airlines play.
There’s no way every passenger has selected a seat a couple of days out. Airlines do this to pressure you into paying more for a seat. At $79 USD, I decided to wait for the 24-hour window to select my seat. I had similar fun with my recent WestJet UltraBasic booking.
Once 24 hours out, there wasn’t anything beyond the exit row, although it was now down to $59 USD. This shows you should always wait when selecting your seat!
Again, I decided to roll the dice and try my luck at the counter rather than online. Upon check-in, I asked if there was availability in AM Plus, Aeromexico’s Premium Economy offering. There was one, and at only $95 CAD ($73 USD), I decided to go for it. To my surprise, even with my credit card in hand, the agent upgraded me at no cost.
So far, AeroMexico AM Plus premium economy is definitely worth it!

What Are AeroMexico Seats Like in AM Plus?
Happy with my free upgrade, I was ready to sit back and take in all the AeroMexico AM Plus service. This is where the excitement ended. AeroMexico seats in AM Plus on 737-800 aircraft are in a three-three configuration, the same as AeroMexico economy class. The only difference is the additional legroom, 34 inches of pitch versus 31 inches.
The only other thing distinguishing AeroMexico seats in AM Plus premium economy is the headrest with”AM Plus” stitched. That’s it.
Still, they are roomy, offering much more legroom than those found in AeroMexico economy, except for the emergency row, but we will get to that.

What Is AM PlusAeroMexico Service Like?
So if the AeroMexico seats on the AM Plus AeroMexico premium economy aren’t much of an upgrade, the service must be, right? Not so fast, speedy Gonzalez.
What Is the Food Like on AeroMexico AM Plus?
The meal and drink service on AeroMexico AM Plus premium economy is exactly the same as economy class. On my six-hour flight from Vancouver to Mexico City, we were all fed a small breakfast of powdered eggs and vegetables with yogurt and fruit on the side. No points are awarded here.
Drinks, again, are the same in the economy. I didn’t have any tequila or cerveza, as my early departure meant I slept the whole way. On my return trip in economy, I decided to have a beer, and there was no charge, so assuming beer and wine are included, AeroMexico AM Plus or not.
Sticking with the meals, I had a pesto pasta swimming in oil on my return. Again, this was in economy class but would have been the same meal in AM Plus.

Aeromexico Premium Economy Service
Unfortunately, the service on Aeromexico premium economy didn’t win me over either.
The flight attendants aboard my AeroMexico journey were undoubtedly welcoming and friendly, radiating positivity throughout the cabin. However, their attentiveness seemed to lag behind their warm demeanor. A noteworthy instance was my own experience with a broken entertainment system at my assigned seat. While I anticipated a chance to flag down an attendant, the opportunity never presented itself. In light of this, I made a proactive decision to switch to an unoccupied seat after takeoff to ensure an uninterrupted inflight entertainment experience.
What struck me as amusing, albeit perplexing, was the initial seat assignment despite the apparent issue with the entertainment system. Given the availability of unoccupied seats and the flight not being at full capacity, it raises the question of why assign a passenger to a seat with a known problem in the first place. The oversight in this regard, despite the otherwise friendly atmosphere, serves as a minor but noteworthy point of consideration when reflecting on the overall travel experience.
Then, during meal service, I was somehow skipped over despite everyone else in my room receiving a meal.
Aeromexico Premium Economy Service Amenities
The only real additional amenity in AeroMexico AM Plus premium economy is the inclusion of a blanket, or so I thought. On my return, I found blankets available in economy class as well.
As you can probably tell, I’m struggling to find the difference here with AM Plus. You get priority boarding and screening through SkyPriority and dedicated overhead storage, but is this really worth $95??
What Is the Entertainment Like on AeroMexico AM Plus?
Once, I was in a seat with an in-flight entertainment system that worked, and I noticed it was the same throughout the plane. The movie selection was OK but not substantive. Same with television shows. Still, there’s enough to keep you busy for a few hours, whether you choose Aeromexico premium economy or not.
Wi-Fi is available with service ranging from one hour to the duration of the flight. There is a free messaging option, which is a nice touch and allows you to stay connected throughout the flight.
So, What’s the Plus in AM Plus?
So, if the only thing AeroMexico AM Plus premium economy gets you is three inches of extra space, what’s the plus with Aeromexico Premium Economy?
As far as I can tell, the perks are really with SkyPriority. This is not a plus for me as I was at the airport at four in the morning, so there is no need for priority. I should also point out that I was laughed at when I tried to access the Delta Plus lounge. Clearly, Aeromexico Premium Economy Service does not get you lounge access…
Instead of AeroMexico AM Plus, I recommend selecting an exit-row seat instead. As I found on my return flight, although the exit row seats do not recline, they have WAY more space. With all the other “perks” included (food, drink, dedicated bin – emergency row, you can not have items in the row), the value is certainly there.
Wrapping up This AeroMexico AM Plus Review
So, is AeroMexico AM Plus worth it?
It comes as no surprise that splurging on AeroMexico AM Plus premium economy might not be the most economical choice, especially if you’re traveling light with just carry-on baggage or embarking on a short flight. The additional pesos spent on this upgrade may not align with the value it brings in such scenarios. Personally, I’d reconsider the AM Plus upgrade only under specific circumstances, like finding myself stuck in a middle seat in economy class when the exit row isn’t an option or, of course, if the upgrade comes free of charge. Moreover, if contemplating an upgrade, I’d lean towards making the decision at the airport check-in rather than opting for a potentially pricier online upgrade.
In conclusion, while AeroMexico AM Plus offers certain enhancements, its true worth hinges on the nature of your travel and seating arrangements. Assessing the value proposition against your specific needs and circumstances will determine whether the additional expense for the premium economy upgrade is justified, making it crucial to weigh the benefits against your travel preferences and budget constraints.

Aeromexico welcomed taking extra fees $65 x 2 =$130 for exit row seating up to boarding, then made a claim as to being 60 years old that could not have me sit in the paid for exit row. Abruptly changing paid seat designation at the gate, after issuing boarding passes. Separating my spouse and I to different rows, stating to reply for refunds. After 1st flight, connecting in Mexico city boarding 2nd flight with identical aircraft, identical exit row seats, was asked by attendant if felt competent sitting in exit row and was allowed. Now Aeromexico claims my refund is denied as reassignment was an upgrade. No extra leg room, different row to spouse, isle vs window, not into AM preimum? Our seats were given to 1 person who slept stretched 3 across. eg friend of flight crew? DON”T WASTE GIVING THEM MORE MONEY, YVR-MeXico CiTY- Merida!
Dude I was with you until you tried to enter the Delta lounge with an AM Plus ticket, like why did you try that lol
I recently booked a trip to Mexico with AeroMexico and purchased the AMPlus. I
thought this also gave you more flexibility with any change such as a missed flight or
cancellation and there would be no additional charge if that occurred when you purchased this upgrade? Do you have any info on this? Thanks
Looks like first change is free for flights to/from USA and Canada. Interestingly it $33 for domestic changes.
Thank you for this review – I am about to fly on AeroMexico for the first time and was thinking about upgrading to AMPlus. Not going to do that after this review so thank you for that
Cheers! Safe travels!
Did you still have to pay for all checked baggage? Thank you.
Aeromexico does not charge for checked bags. AM Plus gets you priority handling though – “Our seat comes with all the SkyPriority® services: priority check-in, boarding, and baggage. “
Aeromexico does charge for checked baggage unless you are
Gold, Platinum or Titanium member. First bag free. Aeromexico Platinum American Express and Santander Infinite also give you one free bag if ticket paid with credit card. All fares do not include baggage unless you are traveling Premier Class. Charges for first bag is $30USD and $55USD for second bag.
You did not say if the economy class also has the entertainment system. This makes all the difference if you have children on board with you. I’m surprised you skipped mentioning this.
Hi Ivette, thanks for flagging.
I did say that it is the same system throughout the plane – see the first sentence under “What Is the Entertainment Like on AeroMexico AM Plus?” so yes, there is the same entertainment system in economy class.
And yes, entertainment systems make all the difference for big children like myself too 😉
