Pandemic or not, travelling can be a stressful experience. Even when you think you have everything under control, the slightest beep going through security can be enough to feel tense. Luckily, no matter if you’re going on vacation or you’re going on business, there are a few things you can do to keep yourself calm and relaxed. By the time you sit in your seat on the plane, you’ll forget all about all the things that had you nervous. With that in mind, here are 10 tips to manage your stress while travelling.

Plan Ahead

First up on this list of tips to manage your stress while travelling is all about thinking ahead. Before you leave home, make sure you check the airport and the news for potential travel delays. This way you’ll avoid spending unnecessary hours in the airport. The airport’s website provides other useful information like the security measures in place so you can plan for them.

When you get to your destination, the last thing you need is waiting for a taxi or in the hotel lobby for your room. Make sure you have all the required bookings in place before you set foot out the door.

Packing Smart

Packing causes a lot of people to stress while travelling, but packing smart can take all your troubles away. To start, make a list of everything you’re going to need for your trip. Then cross an item off the list every time you put them in your suitcase.

Avoid packing the day you travel. Pack the night before so you can sleep knowing you’ve got everything sorted. It also ensures that if you do miss something, you can still fit it in before it’s too late.

Sleep is really important for travelling. Being tired can make you more irritable, only helping to increase stress levels. If you’re going abroad, try and sleep at your destination’s local time. This will prevent you from suffering from jet lag when you get there – you don’t want to be missing valuable time, be that on vacation or for your business meeting, because you’re too tired.

Be Early

The early bird catches the worm for a reason. Give yourself plenty of time before your flight leaves. There are so many things you can’t predict that could impact your journey to the airport and when you’re inside, such as finding a free parking space, long security lines and more.

Enjoy The Spare Time

Airports are one of the most stressful places in the world, but try to enjoy your spare time there as much as you can. 

Go for a walk around the shops even if you don’t plan on doing anything. You’re going to be sitting down for a while so stretching your legs and getting some exercise will do you a world of good. Plus it’ll make it easier to sleep if you can’t get enough the night before.

If you’ve got a laptop, focus your time on answering emails rather than stressing about the journey. Hop on the WiFi and play some games too.

Read a book, listen to some music, watch some YouTube videos or a movie. There’s plenty of things you can do to stay calm and enjoy yourself.

Eat Well

Make sure you have a filling, healthy meal before you get to the airport. This has multiple benefits: you’ve started the day well to give your body energy, you won’t have to pay for the overpriced airport food and can avoid eating, at best, the average on-flight meal and selection of snacks.

It also helps to have all the household jobs done before you leave in the first place. The last thing you need is to worry about coming home to a mess.
