Key West is Key lime crazy. As mentioned in my 6 odd things to do in Key West post, you can find Florida Key Lime in everything from chewing gum to cleaning supplies. Of course, the catalyst for the Key Lime’s rise to fame (and the best way to eat them) is in pie form. During my recent visit to the Keys, I made it a goal to search out the best Florida Key Lime pie. It was a lofty goal that I sadly fell short on – there was just too much pie and not enough time!
I did succeed in trying this local treat in a variety of ways and am happy to share the results. With that here is the summary of my Florida Key Lime Pie experience. At the very least you will know which places to avoid!
Mrs. Mac’s kitchen (Key Largo) – Our first stop. The Key Lime pie was half frozen and by far the worst we had. Keep moving.
Mama’s Mangrove (Sugarloaf Key) – Meh.
Caroline’s (Key West) – I’m pretty sure they get their Key Lime pie from Kermit as it had the same light egg white consistency as the chocolate dipped on a stick slice. Either way, it was the best I had!
Kermit’s Florida Key Lime Shoppe (Key West) – Has all Key Lime everything, but nothing more popular than his famous pie dipped in chocolate and served on a stick. Worth the stop. Worth the hype.
The Fish House (Key Largo) – We couldn’t leave the Keys without trying Key Lime pie meringue style. Made in-house, this Florida Key Lime pie was a close second to Caroline’s/Kermit.
