Of all of Australia’s natural beauty and recognizable landmarks, touring the Great Ocean Road was what I was looking forward to most. Sure, hugging a kangaroo in Adelaide was special and seeing the Sydney Opera House was pretty great, but a day touring the Great Ocean Road showed me the raw beauty this vast country is known for. Thankfully I had a great guide to make that experience that much more interesting.
The Long Drive
Our day touring the Great Ocean Road started not so bright but super early. Lee, our guide for the day, was incredibly cheerful for someone that picks up strangers so early in the morning. His joyful personality eventually won me over, or at least the nap out to the start of the Great Ocean Road helped. My wake up call was Lee personally announcing the arrival as he circled a round-about three times before continuing on touring the Great Ocean Road.
Beaches, Koalas, and Ferns
Along the way we stopped at various vantage points, historic beaches, and a rain forest. The Great Ocean Road is about as diverse as the country it runs through. Then there was the (easy) opportunity to spot koalas in the while. Although I saw them in captivity, seeing these dopey creatures out on their own was pretty unique.
The Main Event
No question, the biggest draw to the Great Ocean road is the 12 Apostles. This collection of 8 rock stacks along the coast is one of the most beautiful sights I have seen in all my travels. I also found the nearby Shipwreck Coast and the Shipwreck Discovery trail fascinating.
A Victoria Vist Must
And Just like that, my day touring the Great Ocean Road was over. Although it was a full 12 hour+ day trip from Melbourne, the time truly flew by. Not driving myself made for a relaxed ride and added a few pleasant stops I would’ve missed had I gone it alone. If you are looking at touring the Great Ocean Road check out Viator’s Great Ocean Road Small-Group Eco-Tour and say “g’day” to Lee for me!

Although I was provided a complimentary day Touring the Great Ocean Road through Viator,
the experience, opinions, and memories are my own.
Great that you enjoyed it but to really get the feel of the place you need to take a couple of days next time.
For sure! I was short on time so this was perfect. I hope to do Australia proper with a camper van some day soon!
Awesome!
