After spending three incredible days wandering Quebec City‘s cobblestone streets and enjoying the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac, I said my goodbyes and began my Cote Nord road trip.

Montmorency Falls

On the way out of town, be sure to stop at Montmorency Falls. This stunning natural wonder towers 30 meters higher than Niagara Falls and offers plenty of ways to enjoy it. Visitors can take in the views from the suspension bridge that spans the top of the falls or experience the thrill of the zip line that flies over the cascading waters. For a more relaxed adventure, the cable car offers a scenic ride to the top, where you can explore the surrounding park, enjoy a picnic, or hike along the trails with panoramic views of the St. Lawrence River and Île d’Orléans.

Speaking of Île d’Orléans, this charming island offers a perfect blend of rural tranquility and cultural richness. Known for its picturesque landscapes, Île d’Orléans is dotted with quaint villages, orchards, and vineyards. You can spend the day exploring artisanal shops, tasting local delicacies, or cycling along the scenic routes that circle the island. Sanctuaire Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré

After checking out the shrine dedicated to Saint Anne at Sanctuaire Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, a sight that has been attracting visitors for over 350 years, my road trip to Côte-Nord began by exploring the scenic Charlevoix Region. This area, nestled beside the St. Lawrence River, is renowned for its rugged landscapes, charming villages, and rich artistic heritage.

The region boasts a vibrant arts scene with galleries like Musée de Charlevoix. It offers outdoor adventures, including hiking in Parc National des Grands-Jardins and kayaking on the Malbaie River. Don’t miss the opportunity to indulge in local cuisine, from fresh seafood at local eateries to pastries from the region’s quaint bakeries. Whether you’re seeking natural beauty or cultural experiences, Charlevoix provides a captivating start to your journey.

Where to Stay in the Charlevoix Region

For a comfortable stay in the Charlevoix Region, consider the charming Hôtel & Spa Le Germain Charlevoix in Baie-Saint-Paul. This hotel offers a cozy, rustic atmosphere with modern amenities and is conveniently located near local shops and galleries. I have had great stays at Le Germain’s properties and have loved my experiences at Le Germain Quebec City and the Alt Hotel in St. John’s. You can’t go wrong here.

There is plenty to do in Tadoussac. As such, I recommend spending a full day exploring it.

Tadoussac is one of the best spots in the world for whale watching, thanks to the nutrient-rich waters where the Saguenay River meets the St. Lawrence. Here, you’ll likely spot various species, including belugas, humpbacks, and even the mighty blue whale. The thrill of seeing these giants breach the surface is unmatched, making a Tadoussac whale-watching tour a must-do for any road trip through the Côte-Nord.
