Welcome to the West Point Lighthouse Inn

Have you ever wondered what spending a night in a lighthouse is like? On the west coast of Prince Edward Island, guests of the West Point Lighthouse Inn can do just that.

While I was touring PEI last fall, I was lucky enough to snag a room at the West Point Lighthouse Inn. For those curious about staying in a lighthouse hotel, read on for my personal review covering the unique history of the West Point Lighthouse in PEI, along with what the rooms are like today.

Where is the West Point Lighthouse Inn?

As the name suggests, the West Point Lighthouse Inn is located on the west coast of Prince Edward Island on the northwestern Cape. From the capital of Charlottetown, it’s a manageable journey by car of roughly 130 km or approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes. If you’re starting from Summerside, the distance is even shorter at just 75 km or about an hour. If you are visiting from the mainland, this lighthouse hotel is 100 km from the Confederation Bridge and takes about an hour to reach.

The lighthouse enjoys a postcard-perfect location adjacent to West Point Beach and Cedar Dunes Provincial Park.

The Rich History of the West Point Lighthouse PEI

Constructed in 1875, the West Point Lighthouse is a prominent landmark in PEI, and its loftiest, reaching an impressive height of 20.6 meters (69 feet), is the tallest square tapered tower in PEI. Its distinctive tapered square structure and striking black and white stripes certainly made it stand out to me and is a favorite of mine amongst all the PEI lighthouses I visited.

The original design of the West Point Lighthouse was quite unique for its time. It featured a square, pyramidal tower connected to a one-and-a-half-story residence with a gable roof. Interestingly, the first two floors of this tower functioned as an extension to the keeper’s living quarters.

Keeper William MacDonald dedicated his service to the West Point Lighthouse for half a century, living and raising his family within its walls. Until 1963, the West Point Lighthouse was manned, assisting ships in navigating through the western entrance to the Northumberland Strait. Currently, the lantern operates electronically, fully automated to meet the needs of modern navigation.

Regrettably, the keeper’s residence was demolished shortly after the lighthouse was automated. Yet, a beacon of optimism shone in 1983 when Keeper William MacDonald’s great-granddaughter took a lease on the West Point Lighthouse from the Canadian Coast Guard. Her sole ambition was to breathe “New Life into an Old Light.”

In tribute to its rich past, meticulous efforts were made in 1984 to rebuild the keeper’s dwelling using its original blueprints. By July 1st of that year, this rejuvenated facility had triumphantly reopened as Canada’s unique Inn within a Lighthouse.

Further enhancing its charm and functionality, in 1987, a substantial addition was constructed on the north side of the tower. This expansion provided much-needed space for a restaurant and seven additional rooms – adding another chapter to this historic landmark’s story.

My Stay at the West Point Lighthouse Inn

I only discovered that staying in a lighthouse hotel was a thing while planning my EV road trip around PEI. I was visiting several PEI lighthouses on my tour, so spending a night in one seemed only fitting.

Although the Tower Room and Keeper’s Quarters were booked for my stay, I was able to get a lovely ocean-side room complete with a fantastic balcony. The room itself is rustic but includes everything you need for a comfortable stay. The decor matches the setting and is all very inviting.

I arrived late afternoon and just in time for sunset. I took a stroll around the park to get some photos, then to the top of the tower to soak it all in. Last, I made use of the in-room fridge to cool some beer before enjoying it on my deck while the sun dipped away.

There was no meal service during my stay, and the suggested local spot given by the front desk staff was closing, so I ended up having a microwavable meal that was in my camp supplies. The immediate area is pretty sleepy, so something to note if you like to eat later.

The staff was super friendly and accommodating. I was visiting with an EV, and they let me charge using an exterior plug, which is always appreciated.

It could have been that I was camping prior to my stay or a combo of the ocean breeze and the sounds of the waves lightly lapping the beach, but I had the best sleep of all my time on the island. Breakfast the next morning was simple but enjoyable. Highlights included French toast and fresh fruit paired with homemade banana bread.

What’s Near the West Point Lighthouse Inn?

You will have plenty to keep you busy near the West Point Lighthouse Inn. There are interpretive walking trails nearby as well as a stunning beach. Moreover, the Cedar Dunes Provincial Park and West Point Craft Shop are just around the corner, along with a marina catering to pleasure crafts and fishing boats.

Given that Prince Edward Island is relatively small, there is much to explore on a day trip. On my visit, I made my way to the Glass Bottle House and the Cape Egmont Lighthouse.

Visiting the West Point Lighthouse Museum

West Point Lighthouse Museum

A stay at the West Point Lighthouse Inn wouldn’t truly be complete without a journey to its museum. Craftily packed within the tower’s upper floors, this museum boasts an extensive collection of lighthouse information and memorabilia, making it one of the Island’s most comprehensive repositories.

The history of PEI lighthouses is enriched with tales of shipwrecks and breathtaking landscapes. Each floor of the museum takes you through a different aspect of the maintenance and roles lighthouses play in guiding marine traffic. You will find it here from “The Life of a Light Keeper” to advancements in technology over the years.

As an added bonus, hotel guests enjoy complimentary access to this treasure trove. It’s certainly worth setting aside about an hour to fully immerse yourself in all it offers!

Views From the Top of the West Point Lighthouse PEI

The best part of the admission fee is the views. I suggest visiting at sunset if you can! Be warned, though, the top is small and can get very warm, especially after climbing the 72 stairs.

Although steep, this ascent rewards you with a stunning 360-degree panorama from the lantern deck – an experience that is nothing short of breathtaking.
