Experiencing The Hochelaga Inn: History, Haunts, and Reviews

Walking through the doors of the Hochelaga Inn is like stepping back in time. The building itself has stories to tell, and I’m here to share them with you.

This mansion has been around for a long time, and it’s seen a lot of things in Kingston. From its beginning as a home to a local lawyer to a beloved inn, it has always held a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike.

Of course, when I visit a historically rich place like Kingston, I want to make the most of my stay. That means choosing an accommodation that reflects how unique the city’s is. The Hochelaga Inn boasts Kingston’s history in abundance, and as I discovered, it’s the ideal base for exploring the city. Welcome to Hochelaga Inn

Not many cities in Canada have stories as interesting as Kingston, Ontario. Kingston has played a pivotal role in Canadian history from being the nation’s capital to safeguarding the colony during the War of 1812. You can feel this rich history in every limestone tower, in the grandeur of its iconic city hall, and even in the elegant mansions that have been transformed into hotels – and the Hochelaga Inn is one of them.

Hochelaga Inn History

Built in 1879, the Hochelaga Inn was originally the home of John McIntyre, a prominent lawyer, and Kingston’s very first mayor. Located across the street from the Kingston Courthouse, it not only gave Mr. McIntyre a short commute to work but also a place to keep tabs on the comings and goings of the attorneys he was up against. It is rumored that the tower was added to give him a vantage point to spy and eavesdrop on the conversations next door.

Today the lookout serves as a space for “quiet meditation” and is part of the Tower Room, which I was lucky enough to call home while in town.

Sydenham Tower Suite

After a smooth check-in process, I made my way to the Sydenham Tower Suite, eager to see what awaited me.

The room was beautifully decorated, with elegant furnishings and thoughtful touches throughout. The cozy sitting area by the window offered stunning views of the surrounding area, and I couldn’t resist sinking into the chair to take it all in.

The host said this room is a favorite among guests, and I can see why – the views around the Hochelaga Inn are so lovely.

Hochelaga Inn Kingston: A Modern Haven of Hospitality

As Kingston evolved, so did the Hochelaga Inn, becoming an iconic landmark renowned for its history and charm. The Hochelaga Inn welcomes guests with its unique architecture and inviting ambiance. As you step inside, you’re greeted by a peaceful atmosphere, warm hues, and comfortable furnishings that create a homely feel.

A Tranquil Retreat

With stained glass windows, a bean bag chair, and an espresso machine the turret room and tower above does indeed offer a place to relax and reflect. Truthfully though, the Holechega Inn has no shortage of these calming nooks. Amongst its massive footprint, you will find quiet corners like the lounge chairs in the gardens or on the front porch.

The inn boasts a range of amenities to make your stay unforgettable. From cozy rooms with plush bedding to modern conveniences like Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs, every comfort is thoughtfully provided. Guests can enjoy complimentary breakfast served in the dining area, adding a touch of homeliness to their mornings.

The Holechega Inn advertises itself as the perfect place for business travelers, however, very little will get done while staying here, but I suppose that’s the point.

Bed and Breakfast Plus

Basically, the Hochelaga Inn is like a bed and breakfast but with all the nice things you’d find in a hotel. The mansion has been converted into a 21-room guest house with modern conveniences alongside the charm and character of its origins. Even though it’s old-fashioned, it has a touch of modernity that current hotels or Airbnb offers.

Three floors below the Tower Room you will find the dining and living area where the included breakfast is served. The Holechega Inn offers up daily hot features and continental-style breakfasts. In my stay, this included French toast with fresh fruit and a potato hash topped with an egg and covered in cheese.

Beyond enjoying breakfast on the porch, the gardens and fireplace seating areas are great places to relax, read a book, or enjoy the complimentary illy coffee and assorted sweets.

Again, there is no issue kicking back at the Holechega Inn.

More than what a guest can ask for

The Hochelaga Inn has started making the most of its unique property and relaxing areas by hosting various events such as yoga in the gardens and wine tastings. Then there is the partnership with Top Tier Bakery. Soon, they will be adding High Tea in the garden. This seems like a no-brainer given the beautiful building that is the Hochelaga Inn and the history that surrounds it and the city.

I was lucky enough to enjoy a sneak peek sampling of the afternoon tea that is planned for the Hochelaga Inn with Top Tier baker and owner Ksenia. Over lavender-topped treats and cookies stuffed with peanut butter (drool), I picked Ksenia’s brain on the history of the Hochelaga Inn. She shared stories of the original owner’s use of the grand space and how it is said to be haunted.

Is The Hochelaga Inn Kingston Haunted?

Many guests have shared their own spine-tingling experiences within the inn’s walls. From strange noises echoing in the dead of night to inexplicable shadows darting across dimly lit corridors, each encounter adds another layer to the inn’s eerie mystique.

But are these ghostly tales merely figments of imagination, or is there truth to the whispers that echo through Hochelaga Inn? Is the Hochelaga Inn Kingston haunted?

My ghost experience…

During High Tea, I over-shared my personal ghost experience from the night before. I’d woken up in the middle of the night disoriented from a day of travel (and a night of wine) and when I came to, I remembered where I was and that the place was said to be haunted. This thought followed me as I went to the bathroom. Just as I shrugged the thought of staying in a tower above a house that has surely seen some things, thunderstruck. This startled me and sent me backward…mid pee.

Again, maybe a little too much for High Tea. Ksenia laughed and reassured me that although the inn is a stop on the Haunted Walking Tour, neither she nor any current staff member had encountered any paranormal activity. Her words were reassuring, yet as night descended, I couldn’t shake the lingering thought from my mind.

While the tales of the Hochelaga Inn Kingston’s haunted history may spark intrigue and curiosity, it’s ultimately up to each visitor to decide whether to embrace the mystery or enjoy the inn’s charm and hospitality without dwelling on the ghostly tales.

It looks like a really pretty place, I like the architecture and the gardens. I’m not sure if I personally believe in ghosts, but I can often freak myself out by over-obsessing over things so I can relate!

Wow the place looks very calming and peaceful. I don’t think I can quite classify your little experience as a ‘ghost story’ but I can surely imagine that the mere knowledge of a place being haunted can be disconcerting 🙂 Sounds like the sort of place I’d like to experience !
