Which City in Canada Is Most Beautiful for Christmas?

Spending any part of winter in Canada will create memories of gentle snowfall while you sit snug inside. Or there could be snowball fights in the beautiful parks, and steaming drinks behind coffee shop windows. Spending Christmas in Canada is an extra magical experience that takes the pristine white scenes and cozy feelings to the next level.

There are festive markets where you can enjoy delicious treats and shop for trinkets, Christmas lights along all the streets, and activities for the whole family – events that will keep you entertained all season long. But which Canadian city offers the best festive season experience? I’ve compiled a list of my top three, ending with my favorite Canadian city for a snowy Christmas.

Toronto

Christmas in Toronto is a busy affair, so be sure to book all your experiences and accommodations (including a private jet charter, because they book up well in advance of the festive season) as soon as you can. And then, get ready for the time of your life.

The Original Toronto Santa Claus Parade

This event, full of holiday cheer, has been around since 1905. It’s the highlight of the city’s festive calendar and features more than 20 fun floats sponsored by local businesses. There are ten marching bands to accompany them, and even an appearance by Old Saint Nick himself.

The Distillery Winter Village

This year’s event is held in a gorgeous part of town: a Victorian-era space in which all the industrial buildings have been transformed into a hub for community and culture. During Christmas time, the cobbled streets are lined with festive cabins selling gifts and knick-knacks, as well as delicious food stalls, cheerful music, and an atmosphere that’s hard to beat. This year’s magnificent Christmas tree is sponsored by Dior and is well worth a visit for the Instagram photos you could take.

Montreal

Montreal is one of the most visited cities in Canada year-round, but it transforms into a true wonderland each Christmas. Expect your stay to be full of welcome and festive cheer!

Montreal’s Christmas Village

Conveniently located near Atwater Market, the Montreal Christmas Village opens every weekend over the entire festive season. The Christmas spirit is everywhere you look: warmly lit stands present seasonal treasures and great gifts (Santa himself is on hand for a photo or two), and talented artisans sell unique ornaments and curiosities.

Noël Dans le Parc

Otherwise known as Christmas in the Park, this lively festival will celebrate its 31st anniversary this year. While “the park” is only one location, the festival is spread out across different parts of Montreal. From dancing and bonfires to free outdoor concerts, poetry readings, and more, it’s a spectacle that lights the Christmas fire in the hearts of every attendee. If you’re in town after Christmas, the New Year’s Eve spectacular is something to see.

Quebéc City

Quebéc City is undoubtedly the most enchanting place in all of Canada to spend the festive season. The peak of the excitement hits from mid to late November when the Christmas spirit really starts to permeate every interaction and experience. There’s so much to do and see, you’ll have trouble choosing!

Stroll through Old Quebéc

Inside the walls of The Old City, you’ll find the most picturesque, winding cobblestone streets, historic churches, and well-preserved architecture in the city. When the snow begins to fall, it’s nothing short of enchanting.

Enjoy the Snowy Aesthetic

Quebéc gets an immense amount of snow to maintain that Christmas card aesthetic from early December, so pack your thermals as you venture into the city!

Take in the Light and Decor

Quebéc takes Christmas very seriously, so you’ll see stunning lights and decorations on display for visitors to enjoy. You’ll find an enormous Christmas tree in the Place Royal, and the decorations along the Rue Petit-Champlain are especially mesmerizing.

Explore the German Christmas Market

Germany is famous all over the world for its Christmas markets, and this one in Quebéc is no exception, especially in its location. Beginning in late November, the city streets are filled with the strains of Christmas carols, the delicious smells of chocolate and cinnamon waft through the air, and lights sparkle everywhere you look. There are locally made items, including traditional German foods and crafts.

Indulge in comfort food

Though Quebéc locals eat exceptionally well no matter the time of year, all the stops are truly pulled out for the festive season. With the onset of the festive season, chefs and bakers in the city offer the most delectable dishes like fondue, meat pies, and ragoût. There are the best local spirits everywhere, and mulled wine is sold warm. What could be more cozy?

Go Ice Skating

The rink at Place D’Youville is a beautiful, bustling choice. There’s also the serene oval of the Plains of Abraham, which is an experience you’ll remember for the rest of your life.

Hit the Toboggan Run

Looking for something with a little bit more adrenaline? Reaching speeds as high as 70km, the toboggan run at Dufferin Terrace offers a rush and an incredible view of the city (if you’re going slow enough to see it)!

A Canadian Christmas

Whichever one of these cities you choose for your vacation this year, know that you’ll have a visit packed with all the good, wholesome things that Christmas brings.
