There’s a lot of decision-making that goes into any holiday planning, from the destination and what you’re going to do there to things like transport and where you’re actually staying. For holidaymakers looking to enjoy more of the countryside and the great outdoors on their next UK holiday, there’s the extra question: tent vs caravan? Which is right for you?
Both options offer their own pros and cons, suited to different needs and styles of travel. So, if you’re looking at the choice between booking a campground or last-minute caravan holidays, take a look as we lay out the case for each of these two options.
The Case for Camping in a Tent
If you think of cheaper holiday options, then camping in a tent is probably one of the first things that springs to mind.
Luckily, tent holidays have come a long way in the last couple of decades, so they’re not quite the no-frills choice that plagued the memories of distant family holidays past. Modern tents can offer a more comfortable experience, especially if you add in things like camp beds, portable heaters and mini-fridges.
That’s combined with the fact that you’re that little bit closer to nature than you would be with any other type of accommodation. You’ll be able to listen to the chirps of nearby wildlife as you drift off to sleep and get to feel the refreshing chill of the morning dew when you step out.
For anyone who’s looking for a simpler style of holiday that gets back to nature and away from the rush of modern life, then there’s no denying the appeal of a tent holiday. It can definitely add a dash of adventure to the trip as you pitch up and assemble your tent, ready for days of outdoor activities and late-night stargazing.
That said, there are still some downsides to choosing a tent. Being closer to nature is all good and well when the weather is fine, but the rain and wind can easily set in to make things a little less comfortable. No matter how good modern tents are, they can’t entirely keep out the rain and cold of the British weather.
The Case for Holidaying in a Caravan Park
There are so many different holiday parks in locations throughout the UK that you’re almost spoilt for choice if you want to book a caravan getaway. You might not have quite as many options as there are for tents but any of these locations are bound to have plenty of exciting activities and beautiful locations to visit nearby.
In terms of facilities, there’s not really a competition, as static caravans have all the benefits of an inbuilt kitchen and bathroom. The bedrooms and living space are clearly separated, so it’s easier not to feel like a group is staying on top of each other’s toes all the time. Plus, they have a front door, which is a bit better at keeping out the rain and wind compared to the zipped-up entrance of a tent.
This does all come at the price of a higher cost relative to a tent pitch. If you’re working with a tighter budget, then caravan parks might be at the top of your price range, unless you go for an off-season slot or midweek break.
You don’t have to spend as much time setting up a caravan, as many parks will already have essentials like cutlery, bedding and towels taken care off. This means you can get your holiday off to a quicker start, rather than spending the first part of it pitching up.
So, Tent vs Caravan – Which is Right for You?
Whether a tent or static caravan suits your holiday better is entirely down to your own preferences, budget and needs. But either of these options still has the potential to make for a great holiday experience.
