5 Interesting Places to Visit in Sri Lanka

Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock, is often called the eighth wonder of the world. It’s also a UNESCO world heritage site thanks to its archaeological importance. The main feature for which it is a world-famous attraction is the surviving frescoes from the 5th century.

The rock fortress is known to be built by King Kashyapa. After his death, it became a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century. People all over the world find this place interesting and visit here all year round.

Buduruwagala is a rock temple and dates back to the 9th or the 10th century. The temple has seven ancient Buddhist figures carved into the surface of a large cliff. The largest figure is  51 feet high and is the tallest statue in Sri Lanka.

It’s also supposedly believed that the temple was a hermitage site for Buddhist Monks. There are many other structures found in the temple whose significance is not known to date.

Pettah Floating Market

In the 1990s, the area in Pettah was the opposite of what it looks like today. It was a rough area with dilapidated buildings and deserted factories. In the last few years, beautification projects have revitalized the area.

Presently, it’s a tourist attraction with a beautiful and calm spot for shopping. More than 90 stalls are set aside for local street vendors selling a wide range of products, including electronics, clothes, and leather goods. It’s a great place to hang out for a quiet stroll and click some amazing pictures at sunset.

Koneswaram Temple

Built in 400 BC, this ancient temple is dedicated to the great Hindu God Shiva. This is a religious pilgrim centre and is one of the five “Pancha Ishwarams”

It is said that the grandeur of this temple was much greater before the 17th-century post which it deteriorated due to the rule of the colonial Portuguese.

There is also evidence of its magnificence that comes from the discovery of many remnants by various geologists and archaeologists. With this, the restoration work began and was completed in 1963 with the old pieces reinstalled. It’s a must-visit for every traveller in Sri Lanka.

Kande Vihara

Kande Viharaya is an 18th-century hilltop temple housing a giant 160 feet tall sitting Buddha statue which can be noticed even from a far distance. Founded in 1734, the temple has been of great importance for the Buddhism followers in Sri Lanka. It has also gone through changes with modifications and additions, but still, the originality of this divine temple hasn’t been lost.

You can explore more via the library, the museum and figures of great Sri Lankan Kings. There is also Bodhi Tree, which is said to be more than 300 years old, also a beautiful moonstone which is a great feature of its architecture. Definitely, you shouldn’t miss the eye-catching sight of the tallest statue.
