Here are 5 things to do in Australia in spring.
1. Melbourne Cup and the Spring Racing Carnival
The Melbourne Cup is a horse race held the 1st Tuesday in November. This race is a big deal in all of Australia and especially Melbourne. The Spring Racing Carnival is the celebration of the beginning of spring and includes the fashion, food, and social experience of the Melbourne Cup during the six weeks leading up to the race.
2. Margaret River
The Margaret River region is one of Australia’s premier wine regions. It is located on the coast of Western Australia south of Perth. The region is one of the most popular holiday spots in the country; not only because of the wineries and food scene but because of the beautiful beaches, nearby forests and one of the largest cave systems in the world. Spring time in Margaret River is even more special because it is the only biodiversity spot in Australia one of 34 in the entire world. You can take one of many different wildflower tours to experience the 2,500 species of wildflowers in all of their vivid beauty that includes 150 species of Orchids and many rare and endangered flowers.
The Daintree Rainforest is a tropical rainforest located in the Far North of Queensland near Cairns and Port Douglas. It is the largest contiguous rainforest in the world and the largest area of protected rainforest in Australia. It is ancient and to put things in perspective, this will be roughly the 135,000,000th spring and time of renewal and rebirth in the Daintree. Come and celebrate with the flora, fauna, and locals who have been the original landowners here for tens of thousands of years.
4. Kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island is just a quick ferry ride from Adelaide South Australia. The island is a popular getaway and holiday destination year round, but in the spring it comes alive with wildflowers. The island is known for being a gourmet food destination and it is home to the #4 ranked hotel in the world, the Southern Ocean Lodge located on the rugged coastal sea cliffs on the island. Despite being an island, there is no shortage of things to do. Here are some of the highlights of Kangaroo Island:
- Walk among rare sea lions on the beach of Seal Bay Conservation Park
- Enjoy the food: produce, fresh honey, seafood, and more
- Visit Flinders Chase National Park where you can see landscape landmarks like Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch, and see wildlife like platypus.
- Enjoy other wildlife viewings at the “natural zoo” on the island including koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, birds, seals, eagles, dolphins, and more.
5. Floriade in Canberra
The Floriade Festival happens every spring in Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory. 2017 marks the 30th year of Floriade. The festival celebrates everything spring represents like the warmer weather, renewal, revival, growth, and change. In addition to an amazing array of flowers on display, there will be food and beverages, performances, demonstrations, workshops, and the streets will light up each night for NightFest.
