5 Reasons why Snapchat for Travel is Great

For the past couple months I’ve been using Snapchat for travel and for the past couple months I have been kicking myself for not starting sooner. Using Snapchat for travel is great and has allowed me to share quick pictures and videos (snaps) of where I am and what I am doing in a fun and easy way. Beyond that it has allowed me to share my travels in ways my blog and other social media channels just can’t. More specifically, here are 5 reasons to use Snapchat for travel:

Snapchat for Travel is Real-Time

The first reason that I use Snapchat for travel is that it is real-timeish. Using the “My Story” feature I can share pictures and videos of what I am seeing and doing over a 24 hour period. Once that 24-hour period is up that snap is gone. This means that anything in My Story is no more than a day old. For me, this is huge. With the amount of partners and commitments I have I struggle to stay up-to-date on my blog. Also, tweeting and posting pictures to Instagram is a little time-consuming when I’m out and about so using Snapchat for travel allows me to stay current.

Snapchat for Travel is Raw

Essena O’Neill, an Australian Instagram star,  has been making headlines with a sad story of living a lie behind social media. Although I don’t feel bad for her (at all), I do get what she is preaching. What you see isn’t what you always get online – this should be obvious to all by now. Travel isn’t always glamorous but if you look at my Instagram account, you wouldn’t see that. Using Snapchat for travel has allowed me to share an unfiltered behind the scenes look as I go. There is limited effects and I really only include some text overlay keeping the images as close to the real thing as possible. No Hefe Instagram filter here.

I’m trying to use Snapchat for travel to share the real side of my nomad life. Admittedly, it is hard. Who wants to pull out their phone when arguing over directions or eating a bad meal? I will try though. Example: I am typing this from a really cool laundromat in Munich…but you would already know that if you follow me on Snapchat.

Snapchat for Travel is Inviting

Snapchat (the company) has even embraced using Snapchat for travel. Under their recently new “Live” channels, Snapchat has added feature cities. Every few days a collection of snaps by locals and travelers are used to show off a location in the coolest and most personal way possible. Watching these always makes me feel like I’m welcomed into the cities shown which is huge for travel.

I’ve been trying to use Snapchat for travel in a similar way– showing off the locations as I go. Snapchat Geofilters adds a fun touch to this.

Snapchat for Travel is Fun

Along with Geofilters you can add fun Emoji icons and minimal text to help the story along. Doing this as well as sharing drunken moments using face filters have made for a laugh or two.

Snapchat up for Travel is Inspiring

Lastly on this list of reasons to use Snapchat for travel is the simple fact that it inspires others to travel. Hopefully my Snaps have encouraged others to visit places like Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ireland, and Lithuania. Of course, don’t just take my word for it. Here’s a List of Snapchat for travel influencers that are sure to get you moving.
